Her sleep was terrible. If she had gotten some sleep that is.
She had spent the entire night turning and tossing in her bed and she felt like crap.
The feeling of guilt that didn’t want to leave and her thoughts that were constantly changing didn’t help her to fall asleep. Tiffany didn’t want to sleep alone. She wanted her boyfriend to be with her. She needed him to be there. But she knew that until she made her choice, he would back off.
Because he was that kind of a guy. He respected her need to have some space and he respected the fact that she needed to make this decision without being influenced by anyone.
What did I do to deserve you, Taecyeon? She had thought over and over again as she was desperately trying to get some sleep, because she knew that she needed a clear head in order to think things through. Everything was a mess inside her brain and her heart.
The young woman had spent the endless hours thinking about what to do. Outweighing the pros and cons of each guy and yet she couldn’t come to a conclusion. She loved Taecyeon. There was no denying in that. Taecyeon is an angel. Taecyeon is her angel. But Jay just had something alluring, something tempting about him. Maybe it’s because she knew Jay perfectly inside and out. Maybe it’s because she feels obliged, because they had spent so many years together. But then again she couldn’t dismiss the idea that spending the rest of her life with Taecyeon would make her so happy. Because he makes her happy.
After a couple of minutes of tossing and turning some more, she twisted around to face the clock on their nightstand. 5AM. She grunted and got up in order to go into the kitchen but stopped halfway into the living room as she saw the giant man on the couch who was seemingly deep in his sleep. His body being too big for their small couch had left him in a weird sleeping position. One of his legs was stretched out on the backrest and the other leg was dangling over the couch and his feet touched the ground. The same had happened to both his arms. His mouth was wide open and he was snoring silently.
‘At least one of us is getting a good night’s sleep.’ She thought while picking a blanket up and covering him with it. She had wanted to kiss his forehead lightly but stopped mid-way and backed away. She couldn’t use him like that in his sleep. Maybe he would object to the kiss. She couldn’t use him like that. So she crept into the kitchen silently, hoping that she wouldn’t wake anyone up.
Tiffany took a cup out of one of the upper cupboards and filled it with a little bit of water. She walked over to the fridge and opened it. Rustling through the piles of medication they had, she was looking for a certain package that Key had been talking about during one of their past conversations.
“I know what it’s like to not be able to sleep at night sweetheart. When I first came out to my parents, they hadn’t taken it so well. I fell into a depression, I was homeless and suicidal. That’s when Taec took me in. Doctors prescribed me some pills and they helped out a lot. I’m better now but yeah. If it hadn’t been for Taec, I probably wouldn’t be alive now.”
She remembered that he had said something along these lines and now she was desperately looking for those pills, because she needed to sleep. Her head was pounding and she felt like her stomach was turning and twisting inside her and the last thing she needed was to wake up the entire apartment by vomiting everywhere.
After a couple more minutes of rustling, she sighed as she found what she was looking for.
‘Vimula. That must be the one.’
She took two tablets out and drowned them with a sip of water before going back to the bedroom and lying on the bed.
Almost immediately she started to feel drowsy and tired. Her eyes slowly closed and she gave in to the darkness as her headache started to drift away.
The sunrays that shined into the room seemed to pierce into the sweet darkness that had wrapped itself around Tiffany as she was forced to wake up by the now blinding sun and the birds that were chirping nonstop outside her window.
Cursing out loud, she got off her bed and almost fell right back into it as her entire sight was blurry and for a second she couldn’t feel her legs anymore. Waiting for a couple more minutes in the same position the blood started to pour down her legs again and her view visibly got better. Tiffany shook her head in confusion as to what had happened to her but brushed it off and got out of her bedroom in order to go to the bathroom. On the way to the bathroom she noticed the empty spot on the couch.
‘Taecyeon?’ she thought as she walked to the direction of the couch. The blanket was neatly folded and rested on the blue couch. As she wanted to reach for the blanket to put it away something seemed to be thrown onto her head, making her hold her head in place because it felt like it was threatening to fall off. A piercing pain shot through her small head and she was whimpering in pain as she realized that the headache from last night came back full force, but even stronger now.
She was in too much pain to realize the angry young man who was walking up to her, furious about what had happened the night before.
Key grabbed her arm harshly and turned her around as he took in her state. His eyebrows knitted in confusion but his anger could not be quelled.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing Tiffany?” he asked with a threatening tone.
When he called her by her full name it meant that there was trouble ahead.
Tiffany didn’t even understand what he said with all the pain that seemed to rip her brain cells apart and just stared at him blankly without responding. She could make out that he was angry. She could also make out the reason as to why he was angry. She knew that it was probably because of what had happened the previous night. But as much as she wanted to apologize and let him know how guilty she felt, her headache held her back from doing all of this as she was struggling to stand on two feet.
Tiffany expected him to be angry. He had every right to be angry. She even expected him to ignore her. But what she didn’t expect was the harsh slap she received from the young, skinny man.
The stinging feeling on her cheek never leaving as he shook his head and sighed out loud.
“Don’t you dare hurt my Taec-baby like that ever again. I swear to god, I will ruin you.” Key said in a loud and clear voice. After he realized he wouldn’t get an answer back, he decided to speak a little more. “We were all worried sick about you. Suzy felt like shit for not knowing what was happening, poor girl thought that this douche bag you call your ex would end up raping you. Taecyeon cried throughout the whole night thinking you would leave him. And I was looking for any excuse possible, because I believed in you. I believed in you being faithful and loyal. But I guess I was wrong. You’re no better than that Chinese girl who left him hanging. If you don’t make this up to him, I will throw you out of here personally. I love you Tiffany, you’re a sweet girl. But if you hurt my best friend, I will kill you. Got it?”
After his long monologue Tiffany could only stare up at him. She could feel the tears building up inside her eyes, not only from the pain of her headache and the slap on her cheek but also from the pain of disappointing her friends. The only people who cared about her, the only people she cared about. ‘What the hell did I get myself into?’ She thought as the tears kept sliding down her red cheek. All she could do was cry and mutter ‘I’m sorry’ over and over again, because she knew that no matter what she says, nothing is going to change the situation she’s in. She screwed up real bad and she is now on the verge of losing all the people she loves.
When she was about to lose the ground beneath her feet, she could feel two strong arms embracing her and a soothing voice hushing her, calming her down with each breath she was forced to take. She didn’t need to look up to know that it was the same person who had slapped her minutes ago. Tiffany could make out his cologne everywhere. He had his special scent. Musky, yet sweet.
“I’m not going to apologize for anything I said or did, because I meant it. But I also meant it when I said that I love you Fany. We all love you. We don’t want to lose you and we sure as hell don’t want to see you get hurt by the same guy twice. Just think about everything, okay? We’re going to give you as much time and space as you need.” is all the young man said before leaving her on the cold, hard floor.
After she heard the front door being closed, she forced herself up on her feet and shuffled into the kitchen because the headache only seemed to intensify. She remembered the medication and decided that this was an emergency and she needed to take it or else she would die out of pain. Taking out another cup out of their shelf, she filled it once more with the clear liquid and took only one pill and swallowed it down her throat. A couple minutes passed and she could feel the same, relaxing feeling overcome her body as she walked into her bedroom and lied down on her bed. The headache seemed to subside and sleep was coming so sweetly that she willingly gave into the darkness, a small smile decorating her face indicating that she was glad the pain had left her.
“I don’t know Taec. I don’t know if you should just leave her like this. I mean wouldn’t it be smarter to stay by her side and show her just how much you guys need to be together? Like win her back or something?” Suzy asked the tall man as she was leaning on her desk, both hands holding the edge of the table in order to not lose her balance.
Taecyeon came into her office the second he woke up, because he didn’t know where else to go and he felt like he needed to talk to someone other beside than his best friend. He needed as many opinions as possible. Especially from people who weren’t involved, so he could get an opinion from someone who would think rationally and logically. Because clearly that’s the last thing he could do.
Sighing, he put his hand up his head and massaged his temple, fearing that a headache might come from all the thinking he has been doing. It was a wonder he was able to sleep at night.
“What do you think about all of this Chansung?” he asked as he looked over the guy, who was bringing in a tray filled with 3 cups of coffee and placing each cup on the desk before going back into the kitchen to put the tray back into its original place.
“Well… I think Suzy is right. While I do think that it’s best to give her some time to think about everything I would still remind her every single day that I love her. Well I mean, you should remind her. Kind of like… show her why you two were together in the first place. That what had happened with Jay is in the past. And what is happening now is happening now.” The tall man said while seating himself onto the desk with his legs wide open so that Suzy could snuggle her back against his chest.
Taecyeon looked away, not wanting to see any lovey dovey motions while he himself is on the verge of a breakdown. He considered his friends advice though. What he had said was right. If Taecyeon wanted to save his relationship with the woman he loved, he needed to fight for it.
Suddenly a new determination rose up within him as he stood up and paced around the sweetly decorated office.
“But how? How can I show her?” he mumbled to himself.
His friends have heard him though and both looked at each other smiling before the small girl answered while looking at Taecyeon.
“Start off small. Something that you know will make her happy. Small gestures that you think don’t mean a lot. Trust me, it will mean the world to her.”
Suzy walked towards him and took his hand, squeezing it tightly while reaffirming him with kind words. “It’s going to work out. You guys are supposed to be with each other. We believe in you.”
Taecyeon felt thankful, to say the least. That he had so many loving people around him. So many friends that were supporting him no matter what happened. He could count on all of them.
He made a mental note to remember thanking them each individually and letting them know how much they actually mean to him once all of this drama was over. He stayed at the office for a little bit longer in order to chat with Suzy and her boyfriend. He had grown to like both of them a lot and time was passing by so quickly he didn’t even realize that they skipped lunch and were now heading to dinner time. He decided it was time to go home and check on Tiffany.
After a couple more minutes, they departed and Taecyeon started walking home.
A couple days passed and nothing had changed. Taecyeon was still sleeping on the couch, Key was still avoiding Tiffany and said girl was barely leaving the bed. She decided to keep it a secret that she started to take the pills regularly, not wanting to get judged. It was just a pain killer anyway, it helped with her headaches and with her pain. It wasn’t anything bad and no one needed to know. At least that’s what she kept telling herself. Tiffany had taken the bottle with the pills inside her bedroom so she wouldn’t have to get up in order to take them as she somehow always felt tired. Taecyeon would sometimes come in, worried because Tiffany hadn’t left the room or hadn’t eaten. She would always tell him that she wants to be alone and needs some time. That she already ate and that she was doing fine. She was doing fine. Wasn’t she?
She sighed loudly as she noticed that the bottle would soon be empty. At the start of the week it was filled with dozens of pills but right now only a couple rested inside them. Cursing silently, she thought about the options of how she could get some more. The people at the pharmacy would never give her the pills without a prescription. And she didn’t want to deal with going to the doctors in order to get a prescription. After a couple more minutes she reached over and took the last couple pills in her hand as she felt a headache making its way. Or at least that’s what she imagined to be coming. This way she could keep drinking them without feeling guilty. After she swallowed them dry she relaxed visibly as her stiff shoulders slumped down and she reached over to her phone.
The only person she could think of, who could get her the medication was the last person she wanted to call. She needed some more time off from him but she needed the pills more. Anxiety already settled in her as she thought what it would be like without the pills. The young woman shook her head hastily as she typed in the number and placed the phone on her right ear.
Her heartbeat started to pick up as she heard a beeping sound on the other line.
What the hell am I doing? No, Tiffany. You need to do this. You need this.
Further thoughts were prevented as she heard the surprised voice on the other line that made her heart skip another beat as her heart filled with warmth of the soft voice.
She shut her eyes tightly and squeezed her phone as she shakily answered her ex boyfriend.
“Hi Jay. Um. Would you do me a favor? I would like to see you.” She already hated herself for wanting to meet up with her ex boyfriend when her current relationship was on the brink of ending as well. The redhead wasn’t surprised to hear Jay so excitedly complying and telling her his where abouts so they could meet up.
What both didn’t know was that Taecyeon was on the other side of the room, listening to everything his girlfriend was saying.
